Lately, it seems that I have been bombarded with anti-gay sentiment.
It started the day after the Election. We cried, we screamed, we danced. The balloons popped. The confetti fell. And we woke up the next morning to find that California had robbed the Gay and Lesbian community of their right to marry.
Since then, the tension has grown. I’ve watched Conservatives on television hypothesizing about “Gay Fascists” that want to force their marriages upon the will of the people. Even CJ got in on the party by declaring ”Good for them” in reference to the Californian ban. (Yes, my sweety is a conservative of sorts. But since his is the politics of so-called “logic” and mines is the politics of passionate compassion, he don’t wanna see me on any political debate. I eat his ass for lunch every time.) The other day, I ended up in a heated exchange on Facebook about the alleged “Gay Boom” in the media, in which people objected to the portrayal of homosexuals on television (I kid you not, I saw someone refer to homosexuality as a “perverse spirit”). But the straw that broke the camel’s back was this morning when I happened to read about a friend of mine in Chicago and his experience in advocating against Prop 8. That’s when I knew that I had to say something.
It’s not that I think I’m that important. But I do recognize that I have a voice and a platform that touches people. And while I cannot say that I’m an activist of any kind, I do try to lend my voice to improving the world at large and so I feel the need to make my feelings about this known.
I am so very sick and tired of people and their anti-homosexual views. I’m also tired of their manipulation of the word of God as an excuse to not call that shit what it is. Homophobia.
On issues of the Bible. Now, I am not a Christian. However, I was for at least 23 some odd years of my life. And in all of my Bible reading, the message that overcame any verse I read was that of tolerance. Don’t just pick out a verse and use it to your advantage. If you’re going to call yourself a follower of Christ, then you need to pay attention to his entire life. It was a life spent helping those that society cast out. Jesus kicked it with lepers, thieves, the poor. When asking yourself What Would Jesus Do, remember that he couldn’t stand hypocrites and blacked out on the Pharasees for their blatant hyprocrisy. Please believe Jesus would be turning over the altars of any temple that was not welcoming, tolerant, and loving of all of His Father’s children. If you’re so big on the Bible, then stop having premarital sex, cheating on your spouse, coveting material possessions, lying, and keep this most important verse in mind: Judge not, lest ye be judged.
But honestly, Jesus should have little to do with legislation. And now I’m targeting everyone who calls themselves being so effin patriotic. There’s a little thing that our Forefathers put in the Constitution known as the separation of church and state. This means that as much as you love whatever God you worship, your ideology should not have a hand in dictating the lives of others. How can we claim to love America, yet deny the inalienable rights of our fellow Americans? I don’t recall seeing “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness unless you’re gay.” Our respective spiritualities are what govern our personal lives. But they have no place in the governing of a nation with citizens from many different walks of life and beliefs. There is no supreme ideology and therefore, no specific religious dogma should influence legislation that affects people’s lives.
Now. Black folks. I don’t know if y’all get this, but discrimination is discrimination. Period. It doesn’t matter if it’s against a racial group, a gender, a religion, or a sexual orientation. To deny American rights to any American citizen is wrong. The stereotypes that stem from homophobia are no more intelligent or reasonable than the attitudes and stereotypes that stem from racism. Do you realize that slave masters once used the Bible to justify slavery? So is it possible that the same manipulation is being used in this case as well? And on top of that, maybe you aren’t aware of Virginia vs. Loving. It was the historical Supreme Court case that fought for the right of a Virginia couple to an interracial marriage in the 1960s. The language of Prop 8 was strangely similar to that of the state of Virginia in their efforts to keep interracial marriages illegal. Was it right when it was imposed on black folks? No. But now that you’ve secured your Civil Rights, it’s okay to shit on someone else’s? Fuck outta here.
To the world in general. Get the fuck over it. Gay people exist. They’re not trying to molest or pervert your children. They’re not trying to diminish the validity of your marriage. All they want is the same damn rights that your heterosexual asses have. Quite frankly, I think that if states continue to treat homosexuals like second class citizens, they shouldn’t have to pay taxes. I know I wouldn’t.
To my homosexual friends, I respect your level of patience and tolerance for this bullshit. I don’t know how y’all get through the day without cussin or knockin people the hell out. Continue to fight the good fight. This is as much your America as it is anyone else’s. You make sure to keep this country true to its word.
