Hip-Hop Gospel – Mary J. Blige & Busta Rhymes “Work That Remix”

Today’s Hip-Hop Gospel comes from an oldie but goodie. It comes from Mary J. Blige’s “Work That” Remix featuring Busta Rhymes. Those who have followed me from the early days on Blogger will remember that I adopted this song as an anthem when it dropped back in 2007. The original version of “Work That” appeared on Mary J. Blige’s “Growing Pains” album and was already full of self-empowerment jewels on its own. Then Busta Rhymes came through and completely smashed the remix, setting off a verse that I wish I could put on repeat and play on a bullhorn loud enough for the entire world to hear.

I chose this song today because it speaks directly to where I am in my life right now and it feels amazing:

“You always find the most positive messages in the most hardcore music.”

I often say that I live my life according to rap quotes and it’s true. Growing up an introverted only child, I didn’t share my thoughts or emotions with too many people. By age eight, I figured out that my mind worked a lot differently than my peers’ and sharing my many concerns about life got me labeled either “crybaby” or “crazy.”

Because I didn’t speak my mind, it was rare that I ever sought guidance. While my mother was loving with me, her stance on the world was pretty much “Fcuk ‘em.” (She only used those words when she’d had a few beers. The edited version of it was “Don’t worry about what people think of you” and “Don’t be bothered with anyone who doesn’t want to be bothered with you.”)  While Mama SBG’s advice came in handy once I was older and had a better grasp on who I was, it didn’t help much in the formative years.
