I hate advice, but I love wisdom. And yes there is a difference.
Advice is when someone decides to give you their perspective on your life. Wisdom is one’s perspective on his or her life; the wins savored and hard times endured that have molded them. Telling me what to do? A major no-no. Telling me what you’ve done and learned along your life path in a take-it-or-leave-it, memoir style, however, will earn you two very attentive ears from SBG.
Over the weekend, I discovered a vault of such stories that has fascinated me for the last four days. While perusing the online home of Esquire Magazine, I came across a section called “What I’ve Learned.” It’s an archive of random tidbits from interviews they’ve done over the years; tall tales and words of wisdom from legendary writers, actors, recording artists, and athletes. Some old, some young. All with refreshing perspectives on the lives they’ve led.
