It Ain’t Hollywood, but It’s Home

Every morning I drive across the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge. My view of our handful of tall buildings; remnants of the industrial age; the funky little Cuyahoga River; and the bridges that link the east and west sides of town reminds me how much I love Cleveland. It’s not glitzy, glamorous, or shiny. It’s rust, grey days, and tough skin. It’s home. And it’s beautiful.

In 2008, a newly unemployed SBG found herself with three months severance pay and nothing to do but reconsider the direction of her life. Thanks to the good folks at the Akron General Partial Hospitalization program (or as I liked to call it: Day Camp for the Mentally Ill), I was also in the midst of recovery from a severe depressive episode that had me viewing the world through new, optimistic eyes. His voice was heavy with confusion. “You wanna do what?”

“I know, I know. It sounds like I’m going all Phonte on you, but hear me out…”

Skinny Bits – 10.20.2011

Oct 21 2011 Published by under Skinny Bits

I am posting this from the WordPress app on my phone and I’m not pleased about it. Something about writing on a smart phone bugs me. I’m a little old fashioned and I feel like the small type pad compels me to write brief thoughts. Maybe this is appropriate for a Skinny Bits post, but I wonder how future pieces will flow. But anyway…

I workshopped my first pieces of fiction this week. For those unfamiliar “workshopping” is when you submit a draft to a group of writers for critique and you sit in silence as they break down your work and offer recommendations. I am not a fan of criticism, the idea of this gave me an anxiety attack. However, I did well. Checked my ego at the door. My classmates actually enjoyed my writing style which was a shock. I survived the experience unscathed. Go me.
