The Law of “Dharma” or Purpose in Life
The seventh spiritual law of success is the Law of Dharma. (Dharma is a Sanskrit word that means “purpose in life.”) This law says that we have taken manifestation in physical form to fulfill a purpose. You have a unique talent and a unique way of expressing it. There is something that you can do better than anyone else in the whole world–and for every unique talent and unique expression of that talent, there are also unique needs. When these needs are matched with the creative expression of your talent, that is the spark that creates affluence. Expressing your talents to fulfill needs creates unlimited wealth and abundance.
The Law of Dharma is another law that is fairly self-explanatory. You find your life’s purpose and use it to serve the world. Thankfully, I found that purpose about a year ago. My talent is writing and I use that talent to share my experiences with the world in hopes that it enoucourages people to find and live their personal truths.
Practicing dharma requires three steps. First, you must get in touch with your best self. Not the image that your ego wants you to project, but rather who you are when you’re at your best. Second, you must discover your unique talent. What is it that you enjoy doing the most? What would you do with your life if money was not an issue? And finally, you must take that talent and then ask yourself, “How can I serve humanity?”
I can honestly say that since I made the commitment to write about my life unapologetically on my blog, I have received so many blessings. I always write about how fulfilling blogging is, and that is not by mistake. The reason that I generate so much love and positivity from my blog readers is that blogging puts me in line with my purpose. When you’re work is aligned with your purpose, the blessings overflow. This is why though I’ve been without steady employment for over a year now, I have never been completely broke. Have not missed one car payment or insurance payment (can’t say the same for my credit cards but life’s necessities are always paid in a timely fashion).
In closing, my experience as I’ve been on my spiritual focus has been very interesting. I have seen the results almost immediately, as blessings and opportunities have been on overflow in my life just in the last week and a half. For starters, my blog has now become part of The Fresh Xpress blog network. In case you’re unfamiliar, FXP is a Huffington Post-style website featuring the hottest bloggers in Young Black America. They recently published my Act Like Yourself, Think For Yourself post. I’ve been selected by Cleveland’s newest social networking group Dollhouse as Clevelander of the Month for my work on Polished Cleveland Magazine. I’ve received two awesome freelance offers that will lead to more money in my pocket, free tickets to a Cavs game, and oh yeah, I talked to Jay-Z on the phone. (It was not a productive or successful conversation at all, BUT the fact still remains that I spoke with my all-time favorite rapper on the phone!)
So that has been my spirtiual focus series. Mission soooo accomplished because I feel more centered and balanced than I have in quite some time. Now, the key is to take the practices I’ve picked up over the last week or so and implement them into my everyday life on a consistent basis. All in all, I’d definitely call this process a WIN.
The Law of Detachment
This law says that in order to acquire anything in the physical universe, you have to relinquish your attachment to it. This doesn’t mean you give up the intention to create your desire. You give up your attachment to the result. This is a very powerful thing to do. The moment you relinquish your attachment to the result, combining one-pointed intention with detachment at the same time, you will have that which you desire. Anything you want can be acquired through detachment, because detachment is based on the unquestioning belief in the power of your true Self. Attachment comes from poverty consciousness, because attachment is always to symbols. Detachment is synonymous with wealth consciousness, because with detachment there is freedom to create. True wealth consciousness is the ability to have anything you want, anytime you want, and with least effort. To be grounded in this experience you have to be grounded in the wisdom of uncertainty. In this uncertainty you will find the freedom to create anything you want.
The Law of Detachment. I have to admit that while this is the most difficult of laws to actually put in practice, it is indeed my favorite. I’m particularly fond of this law because it the principle upon which I’ve built my romantic relationship. So my testimony of its effectiveness is a pretty strong one.
If you’ve been following my blog for awhile, then you’ll remember that my situation hit a tough spot during my emotional breakdown of last year. After months of trying to hold on to what was slipping away, I made a commitment to let go of the situation. When I did, it was a matter of few weeks before it began to come back together. That was in July. And we’ve existed in a pretty consitently harmonious state over the last eight months because I adopted the detached approach. Not being detached from him, but being detached from the “where are we going” question. I don’t want to lay all the details out because I discussed it in my Why Hearts Don’t Break post. I will say that detaching from the result has allowed me to enjoy every moment and those moments have now stretched out over a period of eight months. Detachment, when I am mindful to practice it, works quite well for me.
The key component in practicing detachment is trusting in yourself. Life is full of uncertainty and as much we like to think we can be “prepared for any and everything,” things will blindside you from time to time. You have to trust that you are strong enough to survive whatever comes your way. You have to know that falls cannot always be avoided, but you will never lose the ability to get back up.
Tomorrow’s law is the final one of this blog series, The Law of Dharma (Purpose).
The Law of Intention and Desire
The quality of intention on the object of attention will orchestrate an infinity of space-time events to bring about the outcome intended, provided one follows the other spiritual laws of success. Intention lays the groundwork for the effortless, spontaneous, frictionless flow of pure potentiality. The only caution is that you use your intent for the benefit of mankind.
I like to think of the Law of Intention and Desire as the “make it happen” law. The most basic interpretation of it is that when you set goals and focused your actions on accomplishing them, you can make them happen. Pretty simple, right? Well, there’s a little bit more to it than that. Intention and desire, in order to work properly, requires a lot of faith. While intention is for the future, your attention should always be on the present. The best way to prepare for the future is to be fully engaged in the present moment. The past is a memory, the future is a mystery, but the present is a gift. I’m sure you’ve heard this one before. This law tends to go hand in hand with tomorrow’s law, the Law of Detachment.
To apply the Law of Intention and Desire, you must first reveal your intentions to yourself. A lot of theories encourage you to share your goals with others, but Chopra believes its better to keep them to yourself, so that you’re not subjecting yourself to the judgement of others when you have perceived “missteps” (which we learned in the Law of Least Effort are actually opportunities to learn and grow). Once you’re clear on your intentions, you release them. This is most familiar in the Christian concept of “let go, let God.” When things don’t go your way, trust that there is a reason and a plan higher that what you can grasp. Treat those missteps as an opportunity to learn and grow. And finally, focus your attention on the present moment.
Now yesterday was a rough day for me. I was in bed feeling absolutely icky. My head was pounding all day, I had horrible cramps and some other uncomfortable womanly issues that had me fighting misery for the better part of the day. So unfortunately, I did not focus on this law the way that I focused on the others. No judgement, it clearly happened for a reason. Since I’ve been focusing on these laws, I’ve begun to practice them all on a daily basis as I cover them. This law will go with me throughout life.
Next up, the Law of Detachment.
